Latin American Development in Historical Perspective

Abstract The paper challenges mainstream theories of Latin American development, showing their theoretical weaknesses and pointing to role in ideologically mediating the region’s ‘truncated’ capitalism. To that end, presents an alternative view development starts by considering capitalist social reproduction as a worldwide process regional/national politico-economic mediations structuring global capital accumulation. America’s specific variety capitalism is understood have emerged from its original transformation expanding European into place produce raw materials under favourable natural conditions.
